The Deborah Harry song catalog you find on this page was compiled by me, the webmaster, with the help of my personal record collection, booklets, biographies, setlists, ASCAP, the LoC (Library of Congress), articles and (live) bootlegs. It's my goal to create a page which features Deborah's complete musical body of work, no matter if Deborah was in any way musically involved herself or whether she contributed her own lyrics to a project. In order to keep up the standard of this page and to make it grow you can help by submitting song titles and/or information which are missing on this site. Every contribution is greatly appreciated. Official song lyrics were taken from booklets. I transcribed those songs myself where no official lyrics were available (with no guarantee for their accuracy). I apologize for possible errors and will gladly take corrections. I kindly ask you not to copy any of these lyrics from this page.
All song pages include links to the albums, singles and/or live albums which they were released on. Best Ofs and soundtracks were only listed if there is a special mix available on the record or the song title itself was previously unreleased.

NECESSARY EVIL

(--- speculated lyrics ---)

I said I always wanted to take what you give
A hard metal hammered to a shape that you fit
When I beat up Miss Fortune, told her to get out
I sold the last things on eBay
I was without doubt
Caught between that hard-place
In over my head
Chewing off something in a trap
Quicksand in my bed

Necessary evil
Two arms, two legs
All present and counted
Walking on eggs
Necessary evil
Now don't disappear
Got a whiplash for a memory
I'm staying here

When love takes you prisoner there is no escape
But the secret ingredient is a knife in the cake
Some crime of wisdom put the light in my eyes
You could find me baby under the bridge of sighs

And I'm
caught between that hard-place
In over my head
Chewing off something in a trap
Quicksand in my bed

Necessary evil
Nerves on an edge
Necessary evil
Powder in a keg
Necessary evil
You come, you go
Necessary evil
Oh yes, oh no

Sex in a can
Love in a jar
Airtight container just like a heart
Kept in a vacuum
Born in a barn
You're an artifical climate keeping me warm
A germfree bubble
No bugs allowed
Listening for the hum and crying out loud
Crying, crying out

Necessary evil
Two arms and two legs
All present and counted
Walking on eggs
Necessary evil
You come, you go
Necessary evil
Oh yes, oh no
Necessary evil
Oh yes, oh no
Necessary evil
oh yes, oh no

COMMENTS

quoted from the VH1.com article 'Deborah Harry: Track by Track':

"This song just seemed to encapsulate the inevitability of love in our lives and everyone sort of needing to have love and yet sometimes how very difficult it is. The song itself was an homage to Jimi Hendrix. I met him in an elevator once a long time ago, and I did get to see him play live many times. The song had a sort of bluesy feel to it, a little bit of a dark side; I could hear Hendrix singing it."
