DEBBIE AND CHI CHI

DEBORAH HARRY: "Her name is Chi Chan, otherwise known as Chi Chi, otherwise known as Peepers. And she's a Japanese Chin. They call them Japanese spaniels. It was the forerunner of the King Charles spaniel and was brought to the U.K. on a sailing ship probably in the 1600s, perhaps even earlier, as a present from the Japanese emperor. This breed is first documented in 52 or 54 A.D. or something like that. Old, rare breed."

quoted from the book 'Deborah Harry: Platinum Blonde - A Portrait By Cathay Che' - 1999

"Deborah Harry, for all the spectacular details of her life, is not immune to to simple creature comforts. She lives now with a much beloved, furry, four-legged female companion - a tiny Japanese Chin named Chi Chi. This toy breed has the flat-faced pout of a Pug coupled with long, spindly tufts of white hair best associated with characters from the books of Dr Seuss. Chi Chi is even more otherworldly than most of her kind, as she carries herself with a regal aloofness betrayed only by her penchant to be, at times, quite vicious. Rumor has it that she once killed two rabbits when left unattended in a room with an Easter display. [...] Whatever the truth, like any loyal canine, Chi Chi simply sees it as her job to be guard dog.

Chi Chi is a real lady, she runs up and down and sometimes she likes to get her feet wet but she loves sunbathing. It's great to see her out here, off the leash, they turn into real animals.

Is Chi Chi named after anyone in particular? - No. Her real name is Chi Chan, which I looked up in a dictionary and thought meant 'ferocious blood.' I wanted her to have a strong name because when I first got her she was so little. I picked her from a woman whose own two dogs had produced a couple of litters. When I saw her I thought, Wow, that's the perfect dog for me. She had such an amazing temperament and was the right size, and I thought, Gee, I'd like to have a dog that I can take with me whenever I have to travel.

Do you ever sing to your dog? - Well, I always take her with me to the studio and she insists on going into the room with me and she curls up on the floor and goes to sleep. It's very inspiring. I was just having a conversation with a friend about how much better our lives are since we got dogs. They have some kind of curative quality."

Chi Chi died in the summer of 2007 while Debbie was on the "True Colors Tour."

July 23, 2007 - interview with Tim Blanks

[...] She tells me an extremely involved and touching story of having her heart broken.
"That was yesterday", she says with a novelistic quality. "My dog died. Chi-chi passed. That was hard. I miss her."
