About Blondie:

Blondie emerged as one of the great pop icons of the late-’70s new wave punk scene by defying easy categorization. They wrote great rock hooks and brilliant, ironic lyrics. They had the hippest clothes and the coolest hair. Debbie Harry went from the pages of Punk magazine to the covers of mainstream publications everywhere. They made an indelible mark with hits including “Heart of Glass,” “Call Me,” “The Tide Is High” and “Island of Lost Souls.” Blondie reunited in the late-’90s, and in 2008, they celebrated the 30-year anniversary of Parallel Lines with a re-release of the album that sold over 20 million copies. Blondie is currently writing for their first new record since 2004’s Curse of Blondie.

About Pat Benatar:

Pat Benatar is a four-time Grammy Award-winning American singer best known for hit songs “Love Is a Battlefield” and the iconic 80’s hits “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” and “Heartbreaker”. Benatar is a top-selling artist, and one of the 1980s Top Platinum Album Recipients, according to the Recording Industry Association of America with 12.5 million certified units, including two RIAA-certified Multi-Platinum albums, five RIAA-certified Platinum albums, three RIAA-certified Gold albums, plus 19 Top 40 singles to her credit. Recognized for her thrilling mezzo-soprano vocal range, Billboard Magazine ranked Benatar as the most successful female rock vocalist of all-time.

Pat Benatar was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame at the Second Induction Award Ceremony and Fundraising Gala held October 30, 2008. In her acceptance letter, Patti said, “My upbringing, and the values and ideals I learned back in my hometown kept me grounded. I never forget that a small town girl from Lindenhurst, LI actually got the chance to live her dreams.” She added, “Long Island girls ROCK!”

Review: Deborah Harry reigns supreme at Blondie’s San Francisco show

My recent encounters with Deborah Harry, watching her perform both solo shows and with the band Blondie, didn’t prepare me for how great she’d be at the Fillmore.
Others in attendance Wednesday night shared similar sentiments: She sounded and looked terrific.
I don’t pretend to know what’s going on in the 63-year-old singer’s personal life, but, whatever it is, she should definitely keep it up. At the Fillmore, she looked, sounded and performed better than at any in my history of watching the vocalist, which dates back to the mid-’80s. The only time I’ve seen her as strong was in Blondie videos, filmed some 30 years ago.
Toss in the top-notch performances by the rest of her six-piece band, which still includes original members Clem Burke on drums and Chris Stein on guitar, and you had a night that seemed to completely justify the band’s 2006 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Harry looked trim and pretty as she appeared wearing a short zebra-patterned dress, stalking about in high heels in front of black-and-white-stripped stage that perfectly matched her outfit. The group opened the 80-minute set by roaring through “Hanging On the Telephone,” one of many tracks performed from the 1978 breakthrough album “Parallel Lines.”
Most of the best-received numbers, tunes such as “Heart of Glass” and “One Way or Another,” were released in the ’70s, yet, amazingly enough, the evening didn’t feel like a simple nostalgia show.
To the contrary, many of the songs sounded as fresh and modern as anything that fans will hear being played during this week’s trendy Noise Pop festival in San Francisco.
That just shows how far ahead of the game Blondie was in the ’70s. The band’s peers on the New York City new wave/punk scene might’ve once scoffed at the fashion in which Blondie mixed dance music, punk rock, radio pop, reggae and, even, hip-hop in mainstream-friendly ways, but it’s paid off to the tune of 30 million records sold worldwide.
More strikingly, it’s continuing to pay off. Blondie performed its songs at a breakneck punk clip, punching out most offerings at right around three minutes. But what was most impressive was how well the eclectic mix of sounds jelled. That’s because the band gives each song a highly distinctive musical stamp, a kind of glamorous gloss that might not work for any other lead singer.
Harry was astoundingly energetic throughout the night, jumping about on her tall heels during “Call Me” and commanding the microphone with “Rapture.” The latter, the tune that introduced millions to rap-sung lyrics, was a particular pleasure as Harry and the sold-out crowd shared the still-fun lead vocals.
The band ended the show with a surprise cover of the Beatles’ “Please Please Me,” which was performed as a nod to George Harrison’s birthday (the “Quiet Beatle” would’ve been 66 on Wednesday).
Blondie certainly pleased its Bay Area fans on this night. If you missed the show, the band might be back in the near future. This rejuvenated Blondie is reportedly recording a new album, which could hit stores as soon as spring. Before Wednesday, that bit of news didn’t have me excited—but, having seen the Fillmore gig, I can’t wait to hear the disc.

Reuters interview with Debbie/Zürich pictures

October 25, 2008

filed under: Blondie, concerts, images, interviews, live, tour — Christina @ 12:00 am

A new interview with Debbie (“Deborah Harry still in sync with punk spirit”) can be found on reuters.com.

By Kerri Mason

NEW YORK (Billboard) – With three decades in the business and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, you’d think the outlaw spirit that once guided Debbie Harry’s life and career might have faded by now, replaced by the pragmatic conservatism of a career artist.
But get the eternally young 63-year-old talking about the past, and she still revels in her iconoclastic moments.
“Probably one of the first people to be outrageously inventive in crossing over was (Bob) Dylan,” says Harry. “He took electronic instruments into folk. People were completely outraged; they were furious. Really, this was hell. This was committing complete sacrilege. That’s the same response we got when we did ‘Heart of Glass.’ We had committed sacrilege. Rock ‘n’ roll people were completely offended and wouldn’t even talk to us. It was great. We thought, ‘My God, we did what Dylan did. That’s outstanding. What could be more punk than that?’”
The creative flame still burns bright for Harry, who inspired a generation of frontwomen as lead singer of Blondie, the band that revolutionized music and fashion in the late ’70s. And “the most beautiful girl in any room, in any city, on any planet” — as Shirley Manson introduced her at the 2006 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony — didn’t stop there, extending her career into solo work, jazz collaborations and acting.

CROSSING OVER

When Harry moved to a chaotic, poor and artistically explosive New York in the late ’60s, she worked tables at Max’s Kansas City and picked clothes out of the trash. She formed Blondie with guitarist Chris Stein in 1975, when she was 30. Combining new wave and punk sensibilities with a varied palette of sounds — from disco to reggae to rock — Blondie defiantly pioneered the idea of organic crossover. Harry’s commanding alto and sly glam-punk style provided the perfect representation of the ideal.
“Because I was young and cute, I got away with a lot,” she says. “Or youngish and cute, I should say.”
Seminal songs like “Heart of Glass,” “Call Me” and “Rapture” — the first song involving a rap to go No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — changed the idea of what a pop song could be.
“By the time we got to ‘Rapture’ we kind of knew what was going on,” says Harry, who co-wrote the song with Stein. “We were both so urban and so influenced by so many different things and embracing so many different things. Chris is a very ingenious guy, and I have to really give him credit for a lot of his insights about how we would combine things. I think that’s probably what drew us together. We really loved doing that kind of crossover.”

NEW INSPIRATION

When Blondie disbanded in 1982, Harry embarked on a solo career, which has yielded five albums. The band reunited in 1997 and continues to tour and record. Harry is also a member of jazz collective the Jazz Passengers and an accomplished actress, appearing in adventurous independent films like “Spun” and “Heavy” and on the small screen in such shows as “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” and “Absolutely Fabulous.”
Harry says she doesn’t think there is a music business anymore, but she does find old-school inspiration in the new tools available to artists.
“A lot of people who would quite possibly never venture into becoming a professional musician or entertainer can exercise a moment of feeling, through music, by putting it out on YouTube. They can actually participate,” she says. “One of the great aspects about music is performance. Concerts in the ’60s were like tribal events. Everybody was there, and it was all about peace and love and the music. There was this embodiment of this sort of vibe that took over the whole thing. It wasn’t just people going to a concert. I think separating everyone, and bringing them back together through the Internet, is coming almost full circle, in a very odd way. It’s like a sharing of a mind, an electronic version of the mind. It’s very, I don’t know the right word … metaphysical, I guess.”
Ever busy, Harry is working with Stein on new Blondie material. “We are trying to put together a new package of music, and we’re debating about how we want to release this stuff, how we want to expose it to the public,” she says. “It’s a new dilemma. But I’m really excited about it.”
